What is Migrante?
Migrante is a binational study that examines health status and access to health care among Mexican migrants. Since 2007, Migrante investigators have implemented a series of probability-based surveys on Mexico's northern border. Though the project began only in Tijuana, we've since expanded data collection to two additional border cities: Matamoros and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Migrants are sampled from four different migrant flows:
1. Northbound flow: migrants traveling north from other regions in Mexico;
2. Border flow: migrants traveling along the US-Mexico border region;
3. Southbound flow: migrants returning to Mexico voluntarily; and
4. Deported flow: migrants returning to Mexico via deportation.
Partners
Migrante is a binational collaboration between Drexel University, UC-Merced, New Mexico State University, the University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkeley, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Mexico side of the US-Mexico Border Health Commission (USMBHC). The Principal Investigator, Dr. Ana Martinez-Donate is based at Drexel University and the Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Maria Gudelia Rangel is based at USMBHC.
Funding and Ethics
Migrante is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (grant #R01HD046886, PI: Martinez-Donate). The study was approved by institutional review boards at Drexel University and the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission.
