Study Design
Migrante entails a series of cross-sectional, probability surveys implemented in three cities on the Mexico side of the Mexico-U.S. border. We are also about to launch a pilot longitudinal component in one of these cities.
Sampling Design
Our study employs a multistage sampling design, with a combination of geographic and temporal sampling units, modeled after the Encuesta sobre Migración en la Frontera Norte de México (EMIF Norte). Migrante sampling sites include bus stations, airports, and deportation stations in each of the three cities.
Migrant Flows and Sub-flows
We categorize migrants according to where they are traveling to and/or from (i.e. migration flow):
1. Northbound flow: Migrants traveling north and arriving at the border from other regions in Mexico
2. Southbound flow - Border : Migrants traveling from the Mexico side of the Mexico-US border to points
farther south
3. Southbound flow - U.S.: Migrants returning to Mexico from the U.S. voluntarily
4. Deported flow: Migrants returning to Mexico from the U.S. via deportation
Eligibility
Eligible individuals are defined as those who are at least 18 years old, born in Mexico or other Latin American countries, fluent in Spanish, not residents of the city where the survey is being conducted (except for deported migrants), traveling for labor reasons or change of residence. Individuals can only participate in each phase of the study once.
Survey Tool
Eligible, consenting participants complete an anonymous, interviewer-administered questionnaire using Qualtrics XM. Our surveys include approximately 300 questions focusing on health care access and utilization (HCAU surveys), HIV status and sexual risk behaviors (HIV surveys), HIV and Reproductive Health (HIVRE Surveys), non-communicable disease (NCD surveys), and mental health and substance use (MHSU surveys) to be implemented in 2022). All surveys include additional questions on sociodemographics, migration history, and contextual factors related to the most recent migration stage.
Consenting participants of our surveys also have the opportunity to undergo biometric testing (for example, FDA approved HIV rapid testing). See the Questionnaires page to view our survey questionnaires.
